Master the Huey with our flight tutorial, controls table, and the tactical details from the official dev Q&A — including the helicopter buffs shipped for launch.
Helicopter deployment at dawn — official Hell Let Loose: Vietnam screenshotWhen you think of the Vietnam War you think of helicopters — and in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam the way these choppers handle can make or break a match. Community coverage repeatedly calls helicopter handling "the defining question" of the game: the US Army depends on air mobility to control the battlefield, while the NVA counters with tunnels and ambushes. After the open beta, the developers specifically buffed helicopters: they now take more small-arms fire before going down (rockets still destroy them in one or two hits), fly much better than in the beta, and — crucially — officers can now place spawn points from inside a helicopter.
Hell Let Loose: Vietnam uses the same 50v50 tactical framework as the World War II original, but helicopters add a full third dimension. As a pilot you manage:
Exact key bindings were still being tuned after the open beta and are fully rebindable at launch. This is the expected control scheme based on beta gameplay and the developer Q&A:
| Throttle up / climb | W or Shift (hold) |
| Throttle down / descend | S or Ctrl (hold) |
| Pitch forward (accelerate) | W / Joystick forward |
| Pitch backward (brake) | S / Joystick back |
| Roll left / right | A / D or Joystick tilt |
| Yaw left / right (nose) | Q / E or Pedals / Joystick twist |
| Hover assist / stabilize | Space (if available in a future setting) |
| Open map / squad comms | M / Voice keys (same as ground roles) |
| Exit helicopter | F (same interaction key) |
Before taking off, confirm your role. Only certain squad/commander roles can pilot. If you are an officer, remember you can place a spawn — coordinate with your squad so everyone knows where you are landing.
Raise the collective (hold climb) until the aircraft leaves the ground, then gently push cyclic forward to build speed. Avoid yanking the nose down: you gain speed by lowering the nose a little, not by diving.
Keep the nose level after climbing, use yaw to point toward your objective, and use roll for gentle turns. Watch your altitude over jungle canopy — the UE5 foliage is dense and low passes are where NVA small arms can chew you up (helicopters now survive a few hits, but sustained fire is still deadly).
Reduce speed by pulling the nose up (pitch back), lower the collective to descend, and flare just before touchdown. Land in open LZs (landing zones) away from tree lines where NVA ambushes hide. A fast "hot LZ" landing with an officer aboard can turn the tide — drop troops, place a spawn, and climb out before enemy rockets arrive.
For door-gunner missions, keep the helicopter stable over the target while gunners fire. For supply or reinforcement drops, use low-altitude passes to avoid AT rockets. Remember: one or two rocket hits will still destroy you, so never hover in the open when the enemy has anti-armor assets up.
Console players use the same flight model with controller mapping — left stick for cyclic, triggers for collective, and right stick or bumpers for yaw. The developers rebuilt onboarding specifically because air and movement controls are new to many console players.
Yes — controls are fully rebindable in the settings menu, and the developers improved the video and control options after the open beta, including new options like resolution scaling for performance.
After the open beta buff, helicopters take a few more shots from military small arms before going down. Rockets will still take them down in one or two hits.
Yes — this was confirmed in the official developer Q&A: officers can place spawn points while in a helicopter, a very powerful utility for the US Army.
The UH-1 Huey is the iconic workhorse; coverage also expects gunships like the AH-1 Cobra, scouts like the OH-6 Loach / OH-58 Kiowa, and heavy-lift CH-47 Chinook roles depending on map and mode. See our helicopter list for details.
